Welcome Day 2021
Nearly 1,000 students participated in this year’s Virtual Welcome Day event, attending online activities
with their Village and meeting with faculty and staff members from more than 40 departments and programs. Thanks to everyone who helped make this a successfull event!

Meet the Prize Winners!
Students who attended at least one Village session on Welcome Day were enrolled in a drawing for prizes purchased with donated funds. Congratulations to Bryan Bahena, Raine Beamon, Emily Datta, Rachael Lin, Zitlaly Lopez-Torres and Phyllis Vogel – who each won an Apple Watch! Eighteen more students won special Village logo T-shirts or a plush De Anza Mountain Lion. See more winners below.
Raine Beamon
Business and Finance Village
Raine is a business major starting his first year at De Anza, after graduating from Summit Denali High School in Sunnyvale. He’s planning to transfer to a university, either in California or Japan, where he lived for several years when he was younger.
Zitlaly Lopez
Health and Life Sciences Village
Zitlaly is currently majoring in biological science but she’s also interested in environmental management. A graduate of Branham High School, she enjoyed seeing her instructors on Welcome Day and learning more about De Anza.
Phyllis Vogel
Language and Communication Village
Phyllis is returning to college after a career in education. A former teacher and school administrator, she has a bachelor's degree from San Jose State and a master’s from Santa Clara University. Now she's studying Italian in preparation for a trip next year.
Bryan Bahena
Social Sciences and Humanities Village
Bryan is attending De Anza for the first time this year, after graduating from Santa Clara High School. He plans to study Administration of Justice, but since he’s taking general courses this quarter, Bryan said he was glad for the opportunity to speak with instructors in his major during Welcome Day.
Emily Datta
Creative Arts Village
Emily is beginning her second year as a graphic design major at De Anza. A graduate of Branham High School, she’s planning to earn an associate degree before transferring to study animation at San José State. Emily said she liked connecting with instructors and fellow students in the Creative Arts Village.
Rachael Lin
Physical Sciences and Technology Village
Rachael previously attended college in her native Taiwan. She’s now studying Computer Information Systems in her first year at De Anza, with plans to ultimately transfer and get a four-year degree. As a newcomer to U.S. schools, Rachael said she enjoyed meeting instructors and learning about the college.

Welcome Day Survey Results
The Office of Communications surveyed students to get your feedback on the 2021 event, held on the Friday before fall classes began. Nearly 1,000 students participated in Welcome Day activities and almost 20% responded to the survey.
- Most students said they found useful information about their Village and about departments, services or clubs
- Students said they enjoyed meeting instructors and other students
- While most students (nearly 80%) said they had enough time to accomplish what they wanted on Welcome Day, some said they wished they could have attended more sessions that were scheduled at overlapping times.
