The deadline for F-1 international students to pay is the second Friday of the quarter.* You can pay online through MyPortal, by mailing a check, or in person at the Cashier's Office (in the Registration & Student Services Building, across from the bookstore). De Anza does not accept wire transfers for payment.
*For summer quarter, payment is due upon registration.
The ADD and DROP deadlines are the Saturday and Sunday after the second week of the quarter. This initial DROP deadline is the last day to drop classes with a refund and no record of a grade.*
- No late adds or drops will be accepted!
*Remember F1 students must maintain at least 12 units per quarter. A 'W' is not a grade. Therefore, dropping with a 'W' later in the quarter does not count toward your full course load (12 units). Always come to the ISP office to meet with a counselor and/or immigration advisor before dropping a class!
Seeing a Counselor
F-1 international students should see the academic counselors in the ISP office. Read these Counseling Guidelines on when to drop in or schedule an appointment. Keep in mind:
- Drop-in hours ONLY during the first 2 weeks of the quarter
You must come into the ISP office to schedule an appointment; appointments cannot be made online at this time.
If you wish to take a class at another school like Foothill College while you are a full time student at De Anza College, you can do it through Concurrent Enrollment. You must complete the F-1 Student Concurrent Enrollment Petition available here, and have it approved/signed by a counselor in the ISP office before you are allowed to take classes at another institution.
Note: You must follow policies/regulations for adding/dropping, paying fees, etc. of the school where you will be taking a class.
Taking over 21.5 units
Students who are in their second or later quarter at De Anza and wish to take more than 21.5 units must drop in to see a counselor in the ISP office for approval before adding the class. If an add code is required (e.g. for a class with a wait list), obtain an add code from the professor, and then come to the ISP office to see a counselor for approval.
Changing your major
You can register for classes in your preferred major at any time, but you must meet with an academic counselor to officially change the major listed on your I-20. Make a 30 minute appointment for a major change in the ISP office.
Note: Major changes will not be processed in your first quarter.
Using your health insurance
Health Insurance cards are mailed to students quarterly within the first 2 weeks of a new quarter. If you do not receive yours, please come to the ISP office with your student ID card to request a copy. See the Health Insurance page for more information about your insurance plan.
Going outside the U.S.? You need to submit your I-20 to the ISP office for a travel signature.
- Complete the F-1 Document Request Form available here.
- Submit it with your I-20 to the ISP front desk at least 2 weeks before your trip. If you submit it with less than 2 weeks notice, you may be asked to fill out a credit card form for a $75 express mail fee so that we can mail your I-20 to your travel destination.
Bring a PHOTO ID to pick up your I-20 2-3 days before your departure date.
Remember there are hundreds of requests for winter & summer break, so please submit yours early to make sure it's ready in time for your departure date.
Extending your I-20
Note the program end date listed on your I-20. If you will not complete your degree or transfer requirements in time, you can request an extension up to 6 months before your I-20 expires. The first step is to make a 30-minute appointment with an academic counselor who will review your academic progress. Do not wait until the last minute to request an extension!
Exiting De Anza
If you are completing your studies or decide to leave De Anza College at any time, you must notify ISP by completing the Exit Form available here. If you are transferring, review this Transfer Out Checklist and follow the steps listed to make sure your SEVIS record is properly transferred to your new school. Exit Workshops are offered each quarter to help students with the exit process.
Finally, please check MyPortal to make sure you don't have outstanding fees on your account. Accounts left with holds, tuition and/or health insurance fees will become a problem if you decide to return in the future or request transcripts and/or degrees, and it will also affect your personal credit (financial) score in the U.S.
