Photographing People: The Personal & Professional Portrait (PHTG 021)

A meaningful portrait always expresses a relationship: between two people, among a group, with a cherished child or pet or just with oneself. Through class discussions, slide presentations and demonstrations, participants examine the range of possibilities in photographing people. Together we will explore many situations, from formal portrait sessions to more spontaneous and personal photography. We will look at techniques that help the subject become natural in front of the camera. We will also establish a vocabulary of style and form as we study techniques of some of history’s best photographers of people.

This class is designed for both beginning and experienced photographers who wish to create better photographic portraits. Those who are fascinated by the mystery of personality and intrigued by the social interactions of people and want to capture this with the camera will benefit from this workshop.

Students please bring sack lunch.

The Personal Project (PHTG 022)

A Day of Discussion & Critique with a Photography Pro!

In this one-day intensive workshop, join professional photographer, Margaretta Mitchell, to develop your unique vision through analyzing your own personal photo project. What is your point of view? Your signature style? We will address this subject by looking at a portfolio of photographic prints that you bring for discussion and critique. Bring 20-30 prints up to 8X10 in size to lay out and sequence. We want to work with the editing process as you would if you set out to make an exhibition or a book. Whether you are just beginning to “see” with the camera, or are finally putting together a body of work, we will strive to figure out how to make your photography work for your life. Any subject matter is fine. (We cannot do this process without prints. Please do not bring a laptop and show a slideshow on the computer.)

Margaretta K. Mitchell is a highly accomplished photographer, writer and educator. Besides photographing people, gardens, and other assignments, she exhibits her fine art photography nationally. She is the author of five books, (including Recollections: Ten Women of Photography in 1979, for which she also created a traveling show that was exhibited at seventeen American museums and Ruth Bernhard: Between Art and Life (Chronicle Books, 2000). She is a contributor of both text and images to many more books and publications.

Class size is limited to 24 students. Enroll early – this class will fill up fast!

Digital Event Photography (PHTG 023)

Digital cameras have made it easier than ever to take photos at the important events in your life, be they indoors or outdoors, parties, parades, concerts, etc. In this class, you'll learn the simple techniques that the pros use to come back with photos that will dazzle your friends.

You won't just learn techniques, however. What makes a great “event” photo? What do the pros look for when they look thru the viewfinder? What goes into their decision making process that you don't know? We'll discuss the mental part of shooting that you won't find in books.

Time permitting, bring a maximum of (5) photos to be critiqued. Prints preferred over laptops.

Brad Shirakawa is a working professional whose resume includes newspapers and studios. He shot and edited the book, "Generations, A Japanese American Community Portrait."
